One Iowa In the News: Advocates to Try and Refocus Gay Marriage Debate
from KCRG and The Associated Press.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Advocates for same-sex marriage in Iowa have launched a public campaign aimed at refocusing the debate on gay marriage and moving it from the political arena to family rooms.
The effort began Wednesday, led by One Iowa, a group that supports equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and Freedom to Marry, which seeks marriage equality nationwide.
The Iowa Supreme Court struck down a law banning same-sex marriage nearly three years ago. Since then, advocates say the debate has been framed by political battles, including a vote to remove three of the justices who issued the ruling.
Now, they want to have an open discussion with community members about how the right to marry has improved their lives.
