from LezGetReal.
Democrats in Iowa are at risk of losing control of the state Senate after Senator Swati Dandekar of Marion announced that she was resigning. Right now, the Democrats hold the Senate by a 26-24 margin. This would split the Senate entirely. This has many a local LGBT activist worried given that Republican Cindy Golding will not say if she is for or against same-sex marriage, only that she wants the people to have the right to vote on denying a group of their own fellow citizens their rights.
Don McDowell, a spokesman for Golding, stated that “I think we saw last November Iowans were very frustrated they hadn’t had a chance to weigh in. [Golding] believes fundamentally Iowans should be the final arbiters; she would vote to give Iowans a chance to have a say.” McDowell was referring to the ouster of three of the Iowa judges who made same-sex marriage legal in that state.
...Meanwhile, Troy Price, the executive director of One Iowa stated that “If this does happen, if we were to lose that race, certainly it makes the chances of us seeing a Constitutional amendment passed through the Senate much more likely. And should that happen, if it is able to pass in the next legislative session, as early as June 2013 you could see it on the ballot.”
