Marriage rights focus of initiative

...Groups like the Iowa Family Policy Center and the New Jersey-based National Organization for Marriage are urging their supporters to vote for candidates that define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Cedar Valley gay rights advocates are countering those efforts by phoning potential voters and knocking on doors to share their views.

"Here in Iowa, we stand in the vanguard of social justice," said Chris Schwartz, a community organizer with Working Families Win. "We're not going to give up, we're going to keep at it and we're going to fight for it."

Wednesday's gathering followed similar rallies held earlier this week in Des Moines, Davenport and Sioux City. Each stop on the voter education tour included speeches from local marriage equality advocates.
