One Iowa: GOP should disavow comments on AIDS, homosexuality

Carolyn Jenison, executive director of One Iowa, is calling on the Republican Party of Iowa to disavow comments made by GOP legislative candidate Jeremy Walters, who referred to AIDS as a punishment for homosexuality.

Walters, who is challenging incumbent Democratic state Rep. Kevin McCarthy in House District 67, made the statements in a series of posts on his Facebook page that were first reported by The Iowa Independent. Quoting a Bible passage that says homosexuals should be “put to death; their blood shall be upon them,” Walters said the blood is really AIDS.

“Jeremy Walters’ comments are offensive and they have no place in this year’s election,” Jenison said. “We call on the Republican Party of Iowa to denounce Walters’ comments immediately. HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that does not discriminate. It’s a matter of life and death for many Iowans.”
