Star-Ledger tells legislators to get a spine, support gay marriage

Democrats who are nervous about political fallout over gay marriage have been making squeaky little noises lately about retreat.

Maybe they should take a look at the latest poll, and man up. Like other polls on this question, this one shows that most people in New Jersey are greeting this supposed threat to civilization with a collective shrug. The public is way ahead of the politicians on this one.

Ask Sen. Loretta Weinberg. She was the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor this year and is the sponsor of the bill to establish marriage equality.

"I’ve campaigned all over the state, and based on my unscientific poll, people in New Jersey don’t care about other people’s marriages," Weinberg says. "I’ve never had a single person bring this up to me. And I’m talking about street fairs, restaurants, wherever. People care about their own marriages, and their ability to support their families."
