Supporters unite at Iowa Capitol!
Supporters of equality travelled from all over Iowa yesterday to take part in One Iowa's "March at the Capitol" Lobby Day. While a red-clad crowd rallied for a majority vote outside, One Iowa volunteers took time to have quiet, civil conversations with their legislators about the importance of freedom for all Iowans.
Attendees were able to make personal connections with legislators and talk about why marriage equality is so important to Iowa. They also passed out petitions for key districts, urging Senators not to write any type of discrimination into Iowa’s Constitution.
"I've never been part of something like this before," said Lindsey Smith, a Lobby Day attendee. "It was neat to put faces with some of the representatives and talk to them.
"I think people have such a mistaken view of what our lives are like. If they can see the normalcy of it, I think that changes things. My life and my family is no different than theirs."
John Sellers was among 70 other supporters who attended Tuesday. For John, this issue is all about family.
"There are a lot of families that are different," John said. "[Our opponents] don’t see us as a family, and they need to see that. That’s where we start breaking down the barriers. And that’s something that I was trying to do today."
Thank you to all who attended, and thanks to our Blue Crew volunteers who helped make our Lobby Day a huge success!
