Our Work in Focus
Freedom To Marry Week Recap

Justin Uebelhor
Director of Communications

Thanks to everyone who participated in last week's Freedom to Marry Week activities! Throughout the week, Iowans did their part to support the freedom to marry in Iowa and your hard work showed! Letters to the Editor were published in newspapers statewide, facebook, twitter, and text messages helped spread the word amongst friends and families, and events around the state featured diverse Iowans who support equality. Finally, One Iowa's Lobby Day brought 80 marriage equality supporters from across the state to share their stories at the Capitol.

Moving forward, it will be essential to continue these conversations. The power of sharing your personal story and support for marriage equality is one of the most valuable assets you can lend this movement. Throughout the week, marriage equality supporters were kind enough to share their stories and support on camera. To see these video clips, click the video capture below.

Lambda Legal to Host "Let My Parents Marry" Events

Matt Fender
Lambda Legal Marriage Equality Educator

Iowa families will be speaking out this week about why marriage is important to their families at two educational events in Iowa City and Des Moines. The events are hosted by Lambda Legal and co-sponsored by Drake Legal Clinic’s Middleton Center for Children’s Rights, COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere), and Family Equality Council.

We know that there are many families in Iowa that need and deserve the freedom to marry. The rough numbers we have from the most recent census in 2000 and then from the census-like American Community Survey study in 2005 indicate that there are between 4,000 and 6,000 same-sex couples in Iowa. Around 61% of those couples are raising kids, meaning there are around 3,000 kids in Iowa that have gay or lesbian parents.

We’re very excited to bring together a coalition of same-sex couples, their children, and their many allies. The “Let My Parents Marry!” events are a big step toward moving forward public awareness about the importance of treating all families fairly. And the events will foster the growth of a strong community of LGBT families and allies that can continue offering each other enduring support and advocacy.

Reaching out and working with the loving families that need and deserve the freedom to marry has been a very rewarding experience, and I hope many families and allies will be able to attend the “Let My Parents Marry!” events. Together, we can make sure that all families in Iowa are treated fairly.

In the News

Feb. 13 Des Moines Register Letter: Thanks for support of gay marriage
I want to commend the Register on its nomination from GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) for Outstanding Newspaper Coverage for fair and ongoing coverage of the struggle for marriage equality in Iowa. And just as important, thank you for the editorial-board support of gay marriage.

Feb. 10 Muscatine Journal Letter: Same-sex couples should be able to wed
This week (Feb. 8-14) is Freedom to Marry Week. As an Iowan who believes in fairness, I am in favor of same-sex marriage, and equal rights. These couples deserve the same rights as anyone else; I see no difference in a same-sex couple than a different-sex couple.

Feb 13 Des Moines Register Letter: Laws should recognize couples' committment
The word marriage means many things to many people, but more than anything it's about recognizing the love and commitment all couples share. Many gay and lesbian couples in Iowa have made that commitment to each other. They deserve the respect to recognize this commitment equally under the law.
