Our Work in Focus Mac's World to Feature Same-sex marriage issue
This Wednesday from 2-4 PM, I'll be discussing the importance of marriage equality for same-sex couples on Mac's World. Please listen in live and call in to share your support or ask questions! I'll be joined by Matt Mardis-Lecroy, minister at Plymouth United Church of Christ who will share his support for equality from a faith perspective. Earlier this year, Matt faced off with Chuck Hurley on Mac's World and did a great job of rebutting the drivel of the radical right. If you tuned in, you would have heard Chuck's bizarre notion that supporting same-sex marriage somehow discriminates against bisexuals! With arguments like this, it seems to me that opponents of equality have hit the bottom of the barrel when it comes to finding arguments to support their bigotry. Marriage is a peronal committment between two people who simply want to share their lives together and enjoy the same protections afforded to all couples under the law. Allowing same-sex couples to marry will actually strengthen Iowa families and communities by providing same-sex couples the dignity and security of marriage. Please tune in tomorrow from 2-4 PM as we continue to discuss this important issue on Mac's World. |

In the News Feb. 19 Cedar Rapids Gazette Letter: Marriage is about love, not sexual orientation When you cannot understand my desire to marry, consider your desires. My reasons for wanting to marry are the same as anyone else’s. Last week was Freedom to Marry week. I encourage those who support marriage equality to stand up. Write, shout or speak until we are heard. The right to marry should be given to any who desire it because marriage is about love, not sexual orientation. Feb. 24 Advocate: NAACP Calls for Overturning of Proposition 8 The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People announced support on Monday for California's supreme court to invalidate Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that constitutionally banned same-sex marriage in California. Feb 23 Iowa City Press Citizen: Symposium examines same-sex marriage The UI College of Law's Journal of Gender, Race & Justice is hosting the symposium, "As Iowa Goes, So Goes the Nation: Varnum v. Brien and its Impact on Marriage Rights for Same-Sex Couples." "As a major law school in the state, we felt it would be a privilege, and it would be silly not to host this symposium," said Emily Winfield, senior symposium editor. *We want to know what you're reading!
