The Historic Week Ahead!

On Monday of next week, committed gay and lesbian couples will head to county recorders offices around the state to make their commitment official through the eyes of the law! At One Iowa, we know what a significant day this is for gay and lesbian couples. Looking forward to the day, One Iowa's Board Chair, Sharon Malheiro has written a personal piece about what marriage means to her and her partner Sue. Please take a moment to read and reflect on what this day means to you. To help supporters prepare for the day, we've built a special Marriage web page with useful information for couples planning to marry, folks who want to volunteer to help at their county recorders offices or at One Iowa events, and a listing of events for the coming weeks. We've accomplished a lot over the past few years, but we're not about to let our guards down! Just this morning, the opposition has begun to circulate a petition asking County Recorders to disobey the law and turn away gay and lesbian couples seeking marriage licenses. Can you imagine - on what's supposed to be the most precious day of your life, being turned away? We are working to ensure that Iowans are treated with respect and that no committed couples are turned away. Please donate to our efforts today! We could not do this work without your support! Finally, we want to share with you a message from Senator Matt McCoy. Your support over the past few weeks has been noticed by our elected officials! Going forward, we'll work to protect the freedom to marry with the same vigor we pursued it. With folks like Senator McCoy in the legislature, next Monday marks just the beginning!
