Federal court strikes down section 3 of DOMA
One Iowa Executive Director Carolyn Jenison released the following statement today in response to a federal court ruling concerning the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA):
“This ruling is welcome news to married couples in Iowa. Section 3 of DOMA has unfairly denied federal-level protections to committed, married same-sex couples in states like Iowa. We excitedly await the day when our federal government treats us equally in the same manner as we are treated by the state of Iowa. Today’s decision brings us one step closer.”
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) argued the case (Gill et al v. Office of Personnel Management et al) that resulted in today’s ruling. The decision is expected to be appealed. More information about the case and the text of the ruling can be found here:
