Vander Plaats to make announcement Friday

from The Iowa Independent

Bob Vander Plaats, who finished second in the GOP gubernatorial primary in June, will hold a press conference at the state Capitol Friday morning at 10:30, presumably to discuss his plans for the fall campaign.

An e-mail was sent out to the media Thursday afternoon from Chris Dorsey, a longtime Iowa journalist and former Des Moines bureau chief at IowaPolitics.com. In an interview with The Iowa Independent, Dorsey said there were no further details available at this time about the event. But when asked if Vander Plaats would talk about the rumors that he could run as an independent candidate for governor this fall, Dorsey said, “I’m sure you guys in the press are going to ask about it, and I’m sure he’ll answer those questions.”

Numerous sources close to both Vander Plaats and GOP gubernatorial nominee Terry Branstad confirmed to The Iowa Independent last month that the two former rivals were close to coming to terms on a deal for Vander Plaats to endorse Branstad in exchange for a position in a future Branstad administration.
